Description

Name Your Own Crater On The Moon! πŸŒ™

As we have said for more than two decades –

Nothing could be greater than to own your own crater!

…Or to give a crater on the Moon as a gift to a friend or family member, as a πŸŽ‚ birthday, retirement, wedding πŸ‘° or anniversary gift, or to name a lunar crater in memory of a πŸ‘ΌΒ departed loved one as a memorial.

There are currently about 75,000 unnamed craters on the Moon πŸŒ™ ranging from about 65 kilometers (about 40 miles) in diameter to less than a half kilometer (.3 miles) that are available to the general public.

Don’t Name An Invisible Star!

Why name a star ✨ that is light years away and that you probably can’t find or, at best, barely see in the night sky?

The Moon is visible nearly every night. When you name a star after a loved one, you’re never sure exactly which star is yours. With the Moon, everyone knows which crater is yours!

Crater Size Comparison (Image)

A comparison of several named satellite craters in the Hainzel and Elger group southwest of Palus Epidemiarum on the Moon, denoted by a dashed yellow line. Various unnamed craters, generally between .5 and 4 kilometers in diameter, are denoted by a solid yellow line.

These craters may β›” not be developed 🏑 or utilized in any manner that would alter its shape, surface or general appearance through any manner or means, including (but not limited to) 🚜 terraforming, mining βš’Β or other activities related to settlement or development.

Selected larger craters (10 kilometers or more) are reserved for assignment to persons of significant historical impact as determined by the International Lunar Geographic Society.

Honorary crater names are registered in the annual publication of the International Lunar Lands Administration in Washington DC (U.S. Copyright Office) and Geneva (Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property) in accordance with the Universal Copyright Convention revised in Paris on 24 July 1971.

These honorary names are not subject to United Nations treaties or international restrictions, in accordance with the Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies (q.v.).

As a size comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge is about 2 kilometers – or about a mile and a quarter – in length, from end to end.

The distance between the bridge’s two towers is 4,200 feet – or about 1.25 kilometers.

PLEASE NOTE:

Larger craters are generally – but not always – visible from Earth with an average-strength (hobbyist grade) telescope under optimum viewing conditions.

However, visibility of any crater is not stipulated, guaranteed or warrantied under these terms.

Planning to name a crater on the Moon after a famous πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸš€πŸš€ astronaut, πŸ” physicist, πŸ‘‘ world leader, 🎬 movie star, 🎢 musical artist or TikTok star? Please search the official International Lunar Nomenclature Database for crater names that have already been assigned.

Are there restricted names? Yes – you cannot use obscene, vulgar, racist or otherwise inappropriate words, terminology or phrases in a crater name.

In all cases, the International Lunar Geographic Society reserves the right, without exception or appeal, to refuse assignment and designation of an honorary crater name.

Sales or transfer of an honorary crater name is restricted. The naming of a crater on the Moon is considered a permanent honor, and may not be changed or otherwise altered without the expressed, written approval of the International Lunar Geographic Society.
